Parents Tell Volunteers Their Children’s Behaviour Has Improved

This past week we had the opportunity to visit our friends in Dukwi to re-connect and see how the weekly BaSE programme is progressing.

It was an encouraging visit for two reasons: 1) It is evident the increase in activities for young people in the camp is having a positive impact. Parents are coming back to the Volunteers telling them that their children have improved in behaviour. Children used to engage in drinking, stealing and smoking after school but now they are busy with activities so rates of such behaviours have reduced. Community leaders are happy that there are more recreational activities for the youth. 2) Our BaSE volunteers were very honest with their struggles and how they felt the programme could be improved. One such issue is knowing how to utilize all of the equipment in the BaSE Pack. Tendekai was able to conduct a mini training – introducing new games they can play with the children.

In short…the Dukwi visit was fruitful!

BaSE: New Xade, Botswana

Reports are just coming back but it sounds like our team that spent the past few days in New Xade had an excellent time with local leaders and were able to hand over a BaSE Pack to our host (US Peace Corps: Sunny Lin).

In total, 12 community members attended the training event, 5 females and 7 males representing 10 different community organizations / departments. It was our first time working with delegates that speak Sesarwa so there was a bit of a language barrier at times but overall our facilitators (Oliver & Thato) exceeded our hosts expectations.

On Tuesday Oliver led the delegates in a practical session with local children and it was a bit hectic as 350-400 children turned up (200 were expected:). As usual Oliver made the most of the opportunity and inspired New Xade delegates of what their community could be.

As we continue to develop our BaSE programme it is encouraging to hear how it is being received: “I want to emphasize that what I appreciated the most about the King’s BaSE training is its practicality. The pack is small, the training was relatively short, flexible and low-cost – but overall the impact is enormous. To have something small that we can do great things with is awesome and I am excited to see what New Xade will do with this programme.” ~ Sunny

This past Sunday we visited Full Gospel Ministry in Shashe, Botswana. The trip was specifically organized to support the work that Helena Motswagole is doing with approximately 60 children every Sunday. Our Regional Coordinator (Tendekai) spent the morning with Mrs Motswagole, demonstrated games which can be played using our “BaSE Pack” and conducted a full programme with the children before handing over the “BaSE Pack”.

Mrs. Motswagole teaches the children under her care about hygiene and the word of God every week with the assistance of a team of youth. The desire has been to use sport as a platform to engage the children and now she can bring much variety to such sessions.

We’re excited about this Sunday morning programme and look forward to many life transformation stories from the work in Shashe.
