Dukwi Refugee Camp

September 2, 2007

Dukwi children sporting their new shirts thanks to Rotary Club and Creations of AfricaFrom 26th-29th August The King’s Foundation conducted an outreach programme at Dukwi Refugee Camp. The King’s outreach team consisted of individuals from Botswana, Kenya, Zambia and the UK. Having such a cross cultural team not only benefited our sessions but was a great testimony to the children in Dukwi. Dukwi Refugee Camp is comprised of people from various countries, backgrounds, faiths etc. and segregation is a real problem.

The event was the first of its kind and was initiated by UNHCR and the Botswana Red Cross Society. Sessions began early each morning with leadership training for older individuals within the camp. Developing local leaders is essential if similar work is to continue and eventually become sustainable. Daily sports sessions with approximately 300 children in the camp gave the “rookie coaches” a chance to put newly learned skills into action and was a great opportunity for the King’s Foundation team to encourage the many children in Dukwi.

The King’s Foundation would like to thank Rotary Club [Gaborone] for making a P5000 contribution towards printing t-shirts for all of the children in Dukwi. We are also proud to be associated with “Creations of Africa” who graciously printed all of our t-shirts this holiday season.
